RE: Where Does Everyone Winter?

Henry Ford, the world's first billionaire, and Thomas Edison, one of the smartest men ever, chose Fort Myers. If it was good enough for them it had to be good enough for me. The weather is perfect during the winter with little rain and few bugs. Staying near the water keeps the temperature moderate versus being inland. Unfortunately you pay for it. There are many campgrounds along the Tamiami Trail south of Fort Myers, Wood smoke, Shady Lane and Fort Myers RV Resort which is under new management.

RE: Alaska

Visited Alaska twice. First time we flew to Anchorage, September 1,2001, rented a car for 7 days driving to Denali, Fairbanks and the Kenai peninsula. Turned the car in at Anchorage and took the train to Seward and spent 2 days there.. In Seward we took the Kenai Fjords glacier tour(a must) and a half day halibut fishing. You can also fish from the shore in Seward and catch silvers(coho) in September. We then took Princess cruise to Vancouver. Weather was beautiful, no snow or mosquitoes! The rates were very reasonable the first week in September as was the cruise.
The second time was in July (mostly in Canada) and August in Alaska with my fifth wheel. We saw the sites that we missed the first time and spent time in the Yukon. Again, no snow or mosquitoes. I don't see the reason for a guided tour as the roads(there's not many of them) are better than the highways in Michigan. A higher percentage of Alaskans speak English than you will find in the lower 48 and I never felt threatened by man or wild life even while boon docking. I will be making my third trip in 2009 and am looking at flying into Edmonton and renting a class C for 3-4 weeks.

RE: Keystone Warranty Issues?

Keystone has been great on warranty issues. I bought my Laredo out of state and where I live most dealers wouldn't touch it since I didn't buy it there. Keystone found a dealer near me that would and I got excellent service from the dealer.

RE: Would you go to this camp ground ? ?

Half of the RVer's have dogs and are always looking for a campground that has space to let dogs run off the leash. I am always looking for campgrounds that have open areas next door to let the dogs run. Also, some campgrounds are adding fenced in areas of 1/2-1 acre where dogs can run. This would be an attraction that you could advertise and I for one would be willing to drive the extra miles.

RE: Place to stay in Naples, FL

Just North of Naples on US 41 is Koreshan State Park which is located on the Estero River. There is canoe and kayak rental for the Estero River. Real pretty place.

RE: Boondocking thru Manitoba & Saskatchewan

I second the small towns with RV sites in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that are either free or about $10. The only problem is that they are not published anywhere that I know of.

RE: Air conditioner filters??

My AC came without filters and after about 30 days of living in it, I noticed grime around the outlet ducts. I did a google search and found all kinds of filter material available. I ended up buying a about a square yard of 3 layers of different filterations. Each of the layers is 1/16-1/8" thick. The first layer(that the incoming air sees) is a plastic mesh, the second is a woven fiberglass and the third a carbon impregnated material. I have only used about a 6" by 15" section of the square yard, taking it out and vacuuming every 3 weeks and replacing. My outlet vents have not needed cleaning and this is after 6 months of living and cooking in it. I will cut a new section when I snowbird back to Florida next winter.

RE: Social Security Early----Or Not

Depending on your other income, social security is taxed. I just finished my taxes yesterday and this was my first year receiving social security which I assumed with my pension and a couple other investments would be tax free. I was wrong and had to pay a penalty! Therefore, depending on your other income, for tax purposes it may be better to take the lesser amount sooner and pay a lesser amount in taxes

RE: Key West with Pets

Took my dogs to Key West and found out that they were allowed in restaurants there. There is also a small dog beach. We went to one restaurant where the dining was outside and they had chickens roaming the eating area. Since my dogs are bird hunters, it was an interesting meal.

RE: Thieves stealing Silverado tailgates

Had my Dodge tailgate stolen on Labor Day. Had an aftermarket lock but had failed to lock it. Now always lock it and have a radiator hose clamp as a back up. The tailgate had been spray lined so the total cost to replace $1,730.

RE: Banff-Jasper Camping Questions

Camped at both Whisler and Wapiti. Have a 28 foot fifth wheel and tore my roof on a branch in Wapiti. Went to Whistler the next day and was probably the best campground I ever stayed at for wildlife. Have a picture of an elk standing underneath my trailer awning. The sites are much larger at Whistler all though you may have to stay there a day or two before you get full hook ups.

RE: rv boondocking in Michigan

We stay in the Huron National Forest for grouse and deer hunting. Been doing it for years and I don't think a permit is required. The only time a forest ranger stopped was when one of the guys was cutting firewood to check if he had a permit, which he had.

RE: Gold Panning - Educational ??

Have prospected for gold in many states and provinces. Never hit it big, but always found flakes. The first major gold rush was in North Carolina and discovered by a Hessian soldier by the name of Reid. Suggest you buy a pan, you can google Keane Engineering for an outlet near you. Get some lead shot out of a shotgun shell, spray paint them gold, mix with a shovel full of sand and gravel and practice panning at the nearest stream. Once you can recover the lead shot, you're panning good enough. Chicken suggestion is good as the gravel is brought to you which I learned the hardway in the Yukon. The Dawson City campground I was staying at had a claim on Bonanza Creek that had not been dredged. I went out with the best intentions but forgot about permafrost which means you can only dig down a couple of inches before the ground is frozen. There is a creek just north of Fairbanks where Felix Pedro made his discovery and is free to pan. Prospecting is an enjoyable pastime and something to do in the great outdoors.
